Gazing up in the sky can be an amazing experience, and the most amazing events are set to unfold in the night sky near San Diego. Living in the city of San Diego is hard to see all the wonders of the dark skies due to the bright lights and pollution. Thankfully San Diego is not too far from dark skies and recently I have been getting a call to see the Milky Way up close.
I wanted to share the top areas near Southern San Diego to see the milky way and as a bonus, there is also the Perseid Meteor shower happening this August 12-13 2023.
The Perseid Meteor Shower and the luminous Milky Way will put on a show that stargazers and wanderers won’t want to miss! In this blog, we’ll explore the magic of these phenomena and reveal the top locations around San Diego for optimal stargazing experiences.
The Perseid Meteor Shower: Shooting Stars!
Every year, the Perseid Meteor Shower comes around with shooting stars streaking across the night sky. This meteor shower occurs as the Earth passes through the debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet, creating a spectacular light show. The Perseid are known for their brightness and can produce up to 100 meteors per hour at their peak. I will want to be there to experience this! Will you be there?
Best Viewing Times and Tips
The Perseid Meteor Shower is usually visible from mid-July to late August, the peak around August 11th to 13th. To maximize your chances of catching this cosmic spectacle:
1. Find a Dark Sky Location: Light pollution can hinder meteor shower visibility. Escape the city lights and head to locations like Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or Palomar Mountain for clearer views.
2. Patience is Key: Stargazing requires patience. Bring comfortable seating, warm clothing, flashlights, a blanket, and some snacks. Allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 20 minutes for optimal viewing.
3. Avoid Moonlight: Check the moon phase. A bright moon can wash out the fainter meteors. Aim for moonless or low-moon nights for the best experience. The moon will be in a waning crescent about 9% visible during the Perseid Meteor Showers, odds are in our favor this year!
The Milky Way: Our Galactic Neighbor
Stretching across the night sky like a luminous river, the Milky Way is a breathtaking sight to behold. This galaxy, home to billions of stars, is a band of soft light that arcs across the heavens. The Milky Way’s beauty becomes more pronounced away from urban light pollution.
Locations for Milky Way Gazing near San Diego
1. Julian: Known for its rustic charm, Julian and darker skies. Head to the outskirts of town to witness the Milky Way in all its glory. Also, don’t forget to grab some Julian Apple pie if you get there early!
2. Mount Laguna/Lake Cuyamaca: With its higher elevation, it provides clearer views above the atmosphere’s interference. The Laguna Mountain Recreation Area is an ideal spot. There are also Green Valley Falls and Stonewall Peak.
3. Borrego Springs: Designated as an International Dark Sky Community, Borrego Springs offers some of the darkest skies in Southern California. It’s a haven for Milky Way enthusiasts.
4. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: A vast expanse of desert, this park provides ample space for unobstructed stargazing. Look for official stargazing events and guided tours here.

I also want to mention that there are closer locations that I added to my list where you may get a glimpse of the meteor shower but not the milky way. They did not make my top list due to popularity and will most likely be crowded but you never know, Mt Helix and Mt Soledad are also other locations.
